Seawater Desalination

01 / WHY WATER TREATMENT MATTERS

Seawater desalination requires a treatment program matched to the process. Thermal systems such as MSF and MED concentrate salts while transferring heat; seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) relies on pretreatment and membrane separation under pressure. Feedwater variability, concentration and operating conditions influence scaling and fouling risk. Intake control, process chemistry and performance monitoring must therefore be considered together to support reliable production and the required product-water quality.

02 / RISKS OF AN UNSUITABLE PROGRAM

In thermal desalination, mineral deposits can impair heat transfer. Foaming and carryover can affect distillate quality, while intake fouling can restrict seawater flow.

In SWRO, scaling, particulate fouling and biofouling can reduce output and increase differential pressure. Incompatible treatment or cleaning conditions can compromise membrane integrity.

A program designed for one desalination process should not be transferred to another without assessment. Seawater composition, equipment materials, operating temperature or recovery, and discharge conditions all influence selection.

03 / THE HARVEST CHEMICAL PROGRAM

Thermal scale control — SCAFFIX SI series options are assessed for scale-management requirements in seawater evaporators.

Thermal foam control — MELASIL EO-125 is considered where evaporator foaming and carryover require chemical control.

Intake and fouling control — VANICIDE options are evaluated for the applicable intake or process challenge, equipment compatibility and site requirements.

SWRO membrane care — SCAFFIX antiscalant and Harvest ROC cleaning options are selected through feedwater, scaling and foulant assessment. Thermal-treatment selections do not establish SWRO compatibility.

Program review — product grades, dosing and monitoring requirements are confirmed against operating data, equipment guidance and relevant product documentation.

04 / START WITH YOUR OPERATING CONDITIONS

Continue to the questionnaire and identify SWRO, MSF, MED or another process. Include capacity, intake type, pretreatment and equipment details. For thermal systems, provide temperature, foaming and distillate-quality history; for SWRO, provide membrane model, recovery, differential pressure and CIP history. Include seawater and product-water analyses and the main operating challenge.
